Questions I often get asked about this recipe:

Can I use a different type of apple?

Absolutely! Granny Smith and Honeycrisp are popular choices for their flavor and texture, but you can experiment with other apple varieties. Just keep in mind that the sweetness and texture of the apple will affect the overall taste of the bread.

Can I freeze this bread?

Yes, you can freeze apple fritter bread. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil before freezing. To thaw, let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

What other fillings can I use?

While apples are classic, you can experiment with other fruit fillings like blueberries, raspberries, or peaches. You could also try adding nuts or chocolate chips for extra texture and flavor.

What you need to make Apple Fritter Bread:

For the apple filling:

2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the bread:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

2/3 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup milk

1/3 cup sour cream (or yogurt)

Cinnamon sugar for sprinkling (optional)

How to make it:

Prepare the apple filling: In a medium bowl, combine diced apples, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Toss to coat.

Prepare the bread: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, alternating with milk and sour cream, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Top with half of the apple filling. Repeat with remaining batter and apple filling.

Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, if desired.

Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Tips:

For a richer flavor, use brown sugar in the apple filling.

Add a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans to the batter for extra texture.

Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
