Questions I often get asked about this recipe:

Can I substitute instant coffee for the brewed espresso?
While you can use instant coffee, it won’t provide the same depth of flavor as freshly brewed espresso. For the best results, it’s recommended to use freshly brewed espresso.

Question 2: How do I know if the loaf is cooked through?
Insert a toothpick into the center of the loaf. If it comes out clean, the loaf is cooked through. If it comes out with crumbs attached, it needs to bake for a few more minutes.

Can I make this recipe gluten-free?
Yes, you can make this recipe gluten-free by using gluten-free flour. Be sure to use a gluten-free baking mix that includes xanthan gum or guar gum to help with the texture and structure.

What is the best way to store leftover loaf?
Store leftover loaf in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, you can freeze the loaf for up to 3 months.

Can I add other ingredients to the recipe?
Absolutely! You can add chopped nuts, chocolate chips, or dried fruit to the batter for extra flavor and texture.

What you need to make Chocolate Espresso Loaf with Chocolate Ganache:

For the loaf:

1 cup (200g) unsalted butter, softened

1 cup (200g) granulated sugar

4 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup (200g) all-purpose flour

1/2 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup (60ml) strong brewed espresso, cooled

For the chocolate ganache:

1 cup (200g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream

How to make it:

Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a loaf pan.

Prepare the loaf batter: In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the cooled espresso, until just combined.

Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Make the ganache: Place the chocolate chips in a heat-safe bowl. Heat the heavy cream until simmering and pour it over the chocolate chips. Let stand for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth and creamy.

Glaze the loaf: Once the loaf is completely cool, drizzle the chocolate ganache over the top. Let the ganache set before slicing and serving.

Tips:

For a richer flavor: Use dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet chocolate chips for the ganache.

To make the loaf even more moist: Add a tablespoon of buttermilk to the batter.

For a stronger coffee flavor: Use a strong espresso roast and let the espresso cool completely before adding it to the batter.
