A Healthy Way To Pamper Your Pooch

pumpkin dog treats

We don’t have a dog, but we have four adorable granddogs we love right here in town! These pumpkin dog treats will be perfect to have on hand the next time we get to “dogsit!” I always look forward to it so much!

The pups are all beggars, and I am a total sucker for their sweet faces! It will be good for me to have healthy treats instead of giving them cheese and other “people food!”

I’ve wanted to try this recipe for quite a while, and the dumbest thing has stalled me! I haven’t been able to find a dogbone cookie cutter locally! Isn’t it silly what we allow to slow us down? As if my granddogs would turn down a round or star-shaped treat!

Happily, I was having coffee with friends at the amazing K-town Cakery this morning, and Kari, the owner, loaned me hers! I think this shape is so cute, but for heaven’s sake, don’t let that keep you from trying this recipe!

Why Your Pups Will Love This Pumpkin Dog Treats Recipe

These pumpkin dog treats are super easy to make and only take five wholesome ingredients. You only need pumpkin puree, peanut butter, whole wheat flour, a little cinnamon, and a couple of eggs.

How To Make Pumpkin Dog Treats

Combine all the ingredients in a medium mixing bowl and stir them together.

The dough is stiff and a tiny bit sticky, but I found my trusty Danish Whisk to be the perfect tool again! I don’t know how I ever got along without it!

Natural peanut butter is best for this, but if you use regular peanut butter, ensure it does not have the artificial sweetener Xylitol because it can harm dogs. Jif creamy peanut butter does not; it contains sugar and molasses.

The dough for the pumpkin dog treats comes together quickly, rolls out easily, and cuts neatly. The dough released easily from the cutter, and in no time, I had two dozen treats ready for the oven!

Just like when baking sugar cookies, gather the dough from between the shapes into a ball and reroll until you’ve used it up every bit!

In about twenty minutes, they were done! They don’t seem to spread so I could bake them all on one parchment-covered rimmed baking pan with virtually no clean-up!

The pumpkin dog treats smell amazing when baking; there’s nothing in them that humans can’t eat! I did nibble a small scrap of the dough I baked. There’s almost no sweetener in them, but it was ok!

I couldn’t wait for my granddogs to taste them, so our daughter picked them up and took them home to try. Four wagging tails (no thumbs, you know) said they were a hit. This is Cash, our youngest granddog. He was unhappy and pouted when his mom only let him have one. I promised to bake more!

I thought these would be so cute to pass out to any four-footed trick-or-treaters you see on Halloween! 🎃
